Assam University, Silchar, Assam was established by an Act of Parliament promulgated in 1989(Act 13) and enforced by a notification of the Government of India on 21st January, 1994. It was during the Vice-Chancellorship of Prof J.B. Bhattercherjee a campus at Diphu was conceived. And in the last week of March 2007, the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, approved six academic departments to be set up for a campus at Diphu in Karbi Anglong. The Departments are Commerce, English, History, Life Sciences, Physics and Political Science. On 10th July 2008 Prof. Bhuleshwar Mate was appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Diphu Campus. The Campus was inaugurated and opened by Professor Tapodhir Bhattacherjee, Vice-Chancellor, Assam University, on 18th July 2007. And on 20th July 2007 Diphu Campus started functioning with the six departments.
From a humble beginning with only six departments, where lecture halls were arranged in one of the buildings provided by the authority of Diphu Government College, Diphu, various departments of the University now embarks upon different programmes in collaboration with governmental and corporate bodies. On 18th July 2008 the Campus then housed within the premises of the Diphu Government College was shifted to Hindi Training Centre, Rongthemton, Diphu. It is located in the northwest side of the town and 3 km from Diphu railway station.
The Permanent Campus is located in the hilly terrain spreading over 273 bighas allotted by Karbi-Anglong Autonomous District Council authority with Mikir, Naga and the Barail ranges of hills at the backdrop. Rich in biodiversity and eco-friendly environment, lush green hillocks, ponds and the picturesque tea gardens and teak forest of Karbi Anglong surrounds the Diphu campus. It is about 8km westward from downtown Diphu towards Lumding. The serene setting makes the Diphu campus a unique one with exquisite natural beauty, which captures viewers imagination and provides an ideal atmosphere for study and research. The land allotted has been taken over by the University and the construction process for permanent campus is in full swing.
The campus envisages excellence in learner centric pedagogy with vibrant and innovative curriculum designed and developed to match the challenging scenario of contemporary corporate and academic world. The campus is a pioneering higher-level study centre in this remote eastern part of the country inculcating a unique value system 1of rich Indian culture and ethos for an amiable and socially dynamic academic atmosphere.
The Campus has carved a niche for itself since inception by offering different Post-Graduate courses and research facilities. Many of the departments propose different study centres. The campus with different departments provides state-of-the-art facilities to students coming from different parts of the state. From the beginning the campus has become vibrant in academic and extracurricular activities.
