Since its birth, the centre is actively engaged in teaching and research in the different fields of Bioinformatics. Realizing the need of incorporation of Bioinformatics tools in Life Sciences research, the Department of Life Science, Assam University took special initiative to establish this centre. In January 2009, the Bioinformatics Laboratory was inaugurated by the then Vice Chancellor Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee.

Bioinformatics Centre of Assam University has launched a PG Diploma in Bioinformatics Course of 1 year (2 semester) duration. Till date 5 batches of students have already completed the course. The sixth batch is on the roll. The main aim of this course is to create trained manpower in the field of Bioinformatics. The centre organizes seminars, workshops and training programmes from time to time to popularize Bioinformatics in this region and the entire northeast as a whole. The main thrust area of research of the centre is Computer Aided Drug Designing. Teachers and researchers carry out intensive research in the field of drug designing from natural products with the help of Bioinformatics tools.

Journal Access facilities: Bioinformatics Centre has special Journal access facility under DBT’s e-Library Consortium (DeLCON). A good numbers of high impacted and peer reviewed journals are accessible from the centre. The centre has extended this facility to other Science Departments, Affiliated Colleges, Computer Centre, Central Library and Hostels also. Bioinformatics Centre ranked 1st in number of papers accessed by users in North East India and ranked 8th in entire India.

Resources Developed: The Centre has developed one database of ant diabetic phytochemicals and is named as DiaBank. This will be made available online soon. Bioinformatics Centre has taken an initiative to publish one journal named “Bioinformatika” starting from this year. The journal will focus on recent discoveries and ideas in the field of Bioinformatics.

Achievements
